Mankind has been kicking around a rounded object in many countries the world over since approximately 3,000 years B.C. There are accounts that the earliest known game where people kicked a ball around in a small field was in 1,004 B.C. in Japan. A more gruesome variation was apparently played in South America by the Ancient Incans, where they kicked around the head of their fallen foes. Football results have come out quite differently since then! The earliest documented report of the game comes from a Chinese text dated as far back as 50 B.C. mentioning a game between the Chinese and Japanese.
However, the football owes its rise in popularity to Eton college in Cambridge, England, where it was initially thought to be a vulgar and indecent sport to a semblance of the sport we know today through a set of standardised rules i.e. The Cambridge Rules in 1848. These set of rules were instrumental in the development of association football but the game was still informal at best.
However, ongoing efforts resulted in the formation of The FA or Football Association in 1863 which eventually led to the FA Cup, the world’s oldest football competition. Football began gaining popularity as a sport and in 1904, the international football governing body, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was formed. And thus, football as we know it, was effectively born.
